So as you may know, this week I’ve been doing a countdown to the scariest characters ever on the run-up to Halloween. To check out who made #5 yesterday click HERE.

At number four however, is Tom Riddle, also known as Lord Voldemort who created a  a name so terrifying, people are afraid to even say it aloud. What is about Voldemort that makes children quake in their shoes? That sends a shiver down even a meagre muggle’s back like ourselves?

The fact that he can speak to snakes, that he has the ability to kill anyone with no remorse, or possibly that he just doesn’t have a nose?

No, what makes Lord Voldemort so terrifying is his similarities to our hero, Harry. Both orphans and both have grown up without the influence of their parents and both characters could only ever call Hogwarts home. What makes the novels so terrifying is the fact that Harry could have easily have ended up as Voldemort 2.0 with such an upbringing. Another element that is so terrifying is that you don’t have to be a wizard to end up like Voldemort. This villain is so rooted in 20th/21st century society that the next Voldemort could easily be that weird kid who eats crayons in class. Morbid thinking, I know.

Be sure to come back tomorrow to see who made #3 on my spooky countdown list!
